The Vortex and its shells
Eight shells from Dust to the Nucleus — fewer seats and heavier weight the closer a grain gets to the center.
The vortex is a set of concentric shells. Dust is the outermost and has no seat limit. Each shell further in has fewer seats and a heavier weight.

Which shell a grain sits in
A grain's shell is the deepest shell whose requirement it meets by either ladder — flow or tenure — for shells with entry either.
Shell III is the deepest shell money can buy. Past it, only time and challenges move you.
The inner shells
- Shell II requires both ladders — $12,000 of flow and 45 tenure days — plus a free seat or a won challenge.
- Core requires 60 tenure days and a won challenge.
- Nucleus is taken weekly by challenge.
Orbit
When a shell is full, qualified grains orbit: they keep the weight of the shell below and take the next free seat in order of mass.
